Prostate Specific Antigen
The accuracy of this test is very controversial, but it is medical-legally necessary to test for this on EVERY lab test.
When you are testing for any panel, try to refrain from any type of bicycling, motorcycling, or ejaculating at least 2 days before a test. This may cause your PSA level to be falsely high.
Your PSA level usually rises as you age. The test is used to determine potential issues with your prostate. Your physician is mostly looking for an upward trend in your level. Should this be the case they may want you to see an Urologist for a consult.
If the level of your PSA is greater than 4.0ng/mL. Medical-legally a man may NOT be a candidate for HRT, unless your Urologist is able to confirm that you are cancer free through methodical testing and appropriate procedures
There is so much controversy that a high blood-PSA level is harmful – it is not. High blood PSA levels are used to determine a possible indication that something may be wrong with the prostate.
If you have a have a history of prostate cancer you still may be a candidate for HRT if you:
Are cancer free with note from Urologist/Oncologist for at least 1 year
Have 2 consecutive PSA’s below 4.0mg/dL
Continually are seen by Urologist/etc. 1x/year and maintain cancer free status.
Have a note from your Urologist stating a good bill of health.
Ultimately, the decision to treat your Low T is up to the physician.
Causes of an elevated PSA:
Behavioral
Aging
Poor diet
Genetics
Obesity
Elevated DHT (a form of testosterone) level coupled with an elevated estrogen level THIS SHOWS YOU THE IMPORTANCE OF ESTROGEN BLOCKERS WHEN NEEDED.
Frequent stationary cycling/bicycling/motorcycling
Frequent ejaculations prior to testing
Any type of rectal stimulation during sexual play
STD’s
Medical Conditions
BPH (enlarged prostate)
Aging is the main reason that your prostate would become enlarged.
Could be exacerbated by a higher than normal estrogen level, as well as a high DHT level.
You can reduce your chances by taking an estrogen blocker, if your level is out of range. Supplements such as DIM, Vitamin D3, and potentially Saw Palmetto, can diminish risks.
Prostatitis
A condition that involves inflammation of the prostate and sometimes the area around it.
Some will experience no pain at all, and some will have severe pain.
It is commonly cleared up with a round of antibiotics.
Prostate Cancer
Prostate cancer is a very slow progressing disease.
In fact, many men die of old age, without ever knowing they had prostate cancer.
Several studies indicate that perhaps about 80% of all men in their eighties had prostate cancer when they died, but nobody knew, not even the doctor.
In the past, physician’s DID NOT TEST for ESTROGEN. They assumed it was ONLY the testosterone and its conversion to its metabolite DHT that increased the risk of prostate cancer.
Testosterone’s conversion to DHT has no bearing on an increased risk of prostate cancer unless you have a HIGH DHT coupled with a HIGH Estradiol level. Estradiol is not checked by most physicians. This is very dangerous if not checked and treated. Our physicians will prescribe an Estrogen blocker to keep Estradiol level within your normal physiological range.
