Testosterone is produced when the brain (pituitary gland) receives a signal that a man’s testosterone levels are falling.
The hormone released is LH (“luteinizing hormone”).
In a normal functioning young man’s brain, LH circulates in his bloodstream, which in turn, sends a signal to the testicles to endogenously produce testosterone and sperm. As the testosterone level rises, LH decreases, thereby diminishing testosterone and sperm production.
LH acts as a barometer if you will. This is what is referred to as the “natural feedback loop”.
When the signal from the brain is severed or slows down due to aging or a multitude of external factors, the natural production of testosterone and sperm decreases.
When the signal from the brain does not make it to the testicles, the natural system is considered shut down.
Causes of Low T or Hypogonadism
Aging –As you age, the function of your brain slows down. This decreases the release of LH in response to low testosterone. Once again, the natural feedback loop is disrupted.
Aside from the normal aging process, here are some of the external factors that may cause your natural system to decrease the production of testosterone and sperm:
Past steroid abuse
Past opiate or alcohol abuse
Head trauma (mostly to back of head)
Pituitary tumor
Environmental pollutants
GMO’s
Obesity with a sharp decrease in exercise
Testicular trauma
Testicular tumors
Genetic Abnormalities (i.e. Klinefelter Syndrome, Turner Syndrome, amongst others)
Family History
Varicocele
